Rape or sexual harassment is violence that robs a woman of her decency and strips off her dignity, value and self-esteem.

Every day, women get sexually harassed and raped. Be it in the workplace, at home or in the streets and instead of standing by them, they end up being blamed. You dressed too provocatively, you shouldn’t have passed there, you gave him the wrong impression, you were drunk" and the list goes on and on.

No woman should ever have to go through this inconsiderate and inhumane violence. It’s an unforgettable experience that remains tattooed in the mind of the victim, and some never heal or go back to being the person they used to be.

Here is a list of celebrities who have been victims of rape;

In 2008, Media personality and Social activist, Adelle Onyango was raped by a stranger in the street as she went back to her friend’s car to pick her phone. Adele was 19 years old and a student at the USIU (United States International University).

She left her friends at club Changes and walked towards the Gypsies down Electric Avenue where her pal had parked his car. A stranger who looked harmless offered to walk her there, an offer she refused and kept walking. The man followed her from behind and before she knew it, she was pushed to the ground and the man raped her on the grass.

The incident inspired her to start the foundation ‘NO MEANS NO’ which campaigns against the rising cases of rape and volunteer.

Kenyan Media personality and actress, Eve D’Souza was carjacked and raped by two men in June 2005. Eva was at her gate when two men forced their way into her car. Thinking they were after the money, she went ahead and asked them to take the money and her car, but they slapped her and drove to a slum where they beat her and raped her.

She went for counselling once and then dived back into work. Radio was her therapy.

Singer Xtatic, came opened up to the public that she was a rape victim a few days ago, as she reacted to ethic’s song Tarimbo.

According to her, the song is encouraging rape culture.

The Hot 96 presenter was raped at Jevanjee gardens when she was 15 years old. Anita Raey was leaving a club in the wee hours of the morning when two guys attacked her and her friend. One of them hit her with a stone and when she woke up, she was in the garden and one of the guys raped her as the other held a knife to threaten her.

Instagram comedian, Brenda Jons of the ‘Plesdent Kingstone’ vines revealed that she was first raped by her uncle while staying with her grandmother. She was just five years old and she couldn’t do anything or tell anyone since her uncle had threatened to kill her.

When she was 12, her uncle stuffed socks in her mouth and raped her again. He was a praise and worship leader in the church and no one would believe her if she reported him. When she was 18, she was once again sexually assaulted by a pastor, who gave her Sh200 to make sure she didn’t get pregnant.

Singer and songwriter, Wendy Kemunto was gang raped by two rugby players on her birthday (February 10th 2018), a shameful act that resulted in an unplanned pregnancy.

The singer claimed she was raped after accompanying one of the players to his house when her birthday party ended. “I was slipping in and out of consciousness maybe due to shock, but I was helpless. I couldn’t fight two men who play rugby professionally. Obviously, they were stronger, hence I let them do whatever they wanted to do the whole night,” she claimed.

The two were later found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

In 2017, Media personality Anita Nderu revealed that she was sexually harassed in a matatu twice and once in a taxi.

Sharing the terrible ordeal on BBC, Ms Nderu narrated how while in a matatu heading to work one morning she felt a cold hand on her left breast. Shocked and confused she confronted the man who rudely asked her, ‘why do women have boobs then? Are they not there for us to touch them?’ The manner less man removed his hand and after raising the issue with the conductor he did nothing.

Smooth FM presenter, Brenda Obath was gang raped when she was 13 years old and a virgin. Brenda had been invited to a party and when she stepped out to get some fresh air, one of the guys from the party offered her a drink which was spiked.

She immediately felt oozy and the guy offered to walk her to the bedroom where she would lay. The guy undressed her and raped her and she couldn’t fight him since she was highly intoxicated. Five other guys also walked in to the room and raped her.

In an interview with Radio Citizen, Habida revealed how a sick pervert raped her after preying on her for a long time. The sultry singer revealed that she used to hang out with her friends and some men would join them.

One of them would tell me, I will get you one day. I was a virgin then. So one day, I got a little bit too drunk and the story is, he was taking me home. I never got home that night.” she said.

In 2017, the award-winning actress penned down a shocking confession of how Film mogul, Harvey Weinstein, made several explicit sexual passes at her, when she was a student at the Yale School of Drama.

In 2016, Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris was caught in the thick of sexual slur during a national television broadcast. Miguna Miguna told Passaris on live TV hosted by Jeff Koinange, “Esther you are so beautiful, everybody wants to rape you.”

In the same year, she came out to reveal a sexual harassment reigned on her by Equity Bank CEO, James Mwangi.

Lupita Nyongo’s sister Zawadi Nyongo, was raped at just the age of twelve. Zawadi, a vocal gender activist and author made the revelation when women opened up to talk about their sexual harassment ordeals, under the #MeToo experience.

Socialite and actress Bridget Achieng revealed that her uncle started raping her when she was 9 years old and stopped when she clocked 12.

No one would hear her cry for help as her father had just died and her mum worked till late to put food on the table.

The former Youth TV presenter told a nerve-wracking story of how she was saved from rape by her jeans.

The young presenter was on her way to visit her boyfriend in Eastleigh when the man unsuccessfully tried to rape her.

The guy did not succeed because I fought him hard and luckily it was chilly so I was wearing jeans and boots. It took him too long to take them off me but I always wonder to myself what if he had succeeded? What if I was wearing say a dress?! Wouldn’t it have left a permanent scar on my soul?” she shared on Facebook.

Ex-Big brother Africa housemate, Ann Mbaru is also a victim of sexual assault. Ann was almost raped by a taxi driver who caressed her breasts and threatened her to be quiet.

She fought and escaped the man after lying to him that she had friends in high places who would track him down.
