Prostitutes fed me when I was broke- Dj Shiti reveals

He tells a story of poverty, homelessness and friendship with the night girls in Nairobi.

What you didn’t know is that life was not always fun and games for comedian Steven Oduor Dede who is popularly known as Dj Shiti or 'Magazine'.

During an interview with Pulse, Dj Shiti bared it all about his life before fame.

A class three drop-out born and raised in Mumias, Dj Shiti found his way to fame when met Jalang’o through comedian Fred Omondi’s co-host, Lawrence.

“The latter accorded me a platform dubbed Crazy Comedy where I managed to showcase my skills. I would often commute from Nakuru to Nairobi during each show until I finally decided to settle in Nairobi in 2013,” he said.

Later on he met Churchill just after his show had returned from a long break. Shiti did his auditions during the 100 Episodes of Churchill Show and life for him changed forever. Still, money was a serious issue so after his shows, he would go and sleep on the streets of Nairobi. His source of help came in the form of sex workers who gave him money and sometimes temporary accommodation.

“In between the auditions I would often sleep out in the cold streets of Nairobi. The only people who came to my rescue were my ‘sisters’ known to do business within Koinange street who occasionally gave me money and temporary accommodation.”

In 2014, he joined The Real Househelps of Kawangware but only to appear strictly for five episodes. Public demand led to his full-time character in the show.

Now, Dj Shiti it’s pretty rare to see a funny video on social media without seeing one of his reactions in it. He has featured in various songs and videos from local musicians including Calvo Mistari, King Kaka, Timmy T-Dat, Khaligraph Jonez, Bahati and Sauti Sol.

Speaking of Sauti Sol, Dj Shiti also clarified that he doesn’t has no ill relationship with the band as they are good friends. “They are my good friends, people I relate with easily besides having a lot in common. Besides having worked on a number of projects we have many more in store.”

Well, cheer to your success Dj Shiti, laugh all the way to the bank.
