In Part two of our tribute to great ladies ahead of the International Women’s Day, we honor and appreciate Wahu Kagwi for her wisdom and prowess in the music industry.

Wahu’s life and music

Famous for her ‘sweet love’ hit Wahu Kagwi is one cool human being and among the most educated Kenyan musicians.

The singer who is also known as Rosemary is an accomplished songwriter, actress, entrepreneur and a former model. The famous track ‘Sweet love’ catapulted Wahu into Stardom.

Wahu is a celebrated music artist who has made a name in the music industry. Until recently, when she shifted to sing gospel music, Wahu enjoyed a successful bout doing secular music.

The veteran singer studied Mathematics in the University of Nairobi and came out very successful. The brave singer studied for her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examinations (KCSE) at Precious blood Riruta. She also has a MA in Communication.

Wahu and her friend even wrote a song known as ‘showers of blessing’ while celebrating their impressive performance in KCSE. The song was too good and it used it as the school’s national anthem

New life direction

She recently made headlines after she turned a new leaf and began to sing gospel music. Wahu said, “I had my first completely genuine discussion with God then, I told him that He needed to let me know why He created me, and what I’m supposed to be doing here on earth. God answered my prayer then through a DVD by the late Dr Myles Munroe titled “Purpose”.

The ‘Sweet love’ hit maker has been in the industry for 18 years. Her first single was ‘Niangalie’ and it was well received.

The pop singer is married to an award-winning artist David Mathenge famously referred to as Nameless; another well accomplished artist not only in Kenya but across the continent.

Wahu has shared the stage with many big artists in Africa and she is one woman who cannot be ignored. One with a heart of gold. Her musical prowess has seen her work alongside prominent companies. Owing to her talent and expertise in the music industry she has been facilitated to travel around the globe on international tours, sharing stages with international music starts like Sean Paul and Wayne Wonder.

Loving mother

The dedicated mom left the music scene for two years so that she could focus her attention on bringing up her daughter Tumiso.

She wrote ‘Sweet love’ song while expecting her daughter Tumiso and she dedicated it to her. She had no intentions of releasing the song. However, her husband and producer insisted that she releases the song.

The mother of two is a shoeholic. It is almost impossible for her to walk past a shoe store as she is always attracted to them.

Wahu wanted to be a hairdresser but her mom did not want to hear of that. She had to grow another idea which was becoming a hair hostess

The veteran singer apparently needs noise or music system in order fall asleep

She uses natural stuff for her skin care for instance potatoes, cucumber, tomatoes.

The phenomenal woman hates driving manual cars especially on hills.

She is an avocado fanatic; she can eat them with anything from bread, beans, ugali to fries.

Social responsibility

Wahu currently coordinates the Mkenya Daima initiative, a peaceful/non-violence initiative that started in 2012.

The initiative came to existence following the 2007/2008 post-election violence that Kenya experienced where over 1,000 people were injured and lost their lives and more than 600,000 Kenyans were internally displaced and property worth billions wiped out.

The ultimate aim of this project is to support peaceful elections and affluence thereafter. Her Masters in Communication has been of help with the project.

Wahu loves being of assistance and she is proactive when it comes to taking part in bringing chance and impacting others.

The gold-hearted individual always takes her time to encourage young lovers and the youth generally. She has severally, in the recent past given them lessons on how to start small in relationships.

Awards, endorsements

She received the most sort for African accolade; Best Female Artist category in the MTV Africa Music Awards.

She also bagged home an award from Pearl of Africa Music Awards, Chaguo La Teenez Awards, Kisima Music Awards among many more.

She also featured in a local TV program; Tazama on KTN. Wahu is currently the Brand Ambassador – REXONA
