Diamond is the biggest artiste in Kenya, not Sauti Sol - Churchill Show DJ

Do you agree?

Churchill show’s DJ Eli Waiganjo believes that there is an explanation as to why Diamond continues to win big in Kenya, even bigger than Sauti Sol.

He believes that the reason Diamond is able to pull bigger crowds in Kenya than even our own Sauti Sol is that he has ‘maintained an originality deeply ingrained in his culture.’

“The reason why Diamond is the biggest artiste in Kenya and not Sauti Sol is that he has maintained an originality deeply ingrained in his culture. He can comfortably tell stories from his home and the audience can very much feel the authenticity.” DJ E told Pulse Magazine.

He also believes that the reason why Kenyan music is not exactly popping in the DJ booths is that Kenyans have now become a ‘play me this song’ generation and our varied tastes gotten from traveling makes it impossible to play 80% local content. Unlike Ugandans and Tanzanians who are ride or die for their local music

“ In the 1990s there were no song requests, you would simply let the DJs do their thing. Now we have the ‘play me this song’ generation. The average Kenyan music fanatic is well travelled. We have picked up varied tastes in music from our travels and associations abroad. It’s hard to put them in one box and play 80% local content. Uganda and Tanzania don’t care. They play their music, 80 percent of the time.” He disclosed.

He, however, feels optimistic that we will get to a time when a DJ can make a party pop with 80% local content. “It will take time to get Kenya there but we sure will get there.”
