American politician says he has “given up on America” and will be moving to Africa
He says he is 'done with America'
Now, after his 3rd conviction, former Democratic congressman from Chicago, Illinois, 66-year-old Mel Reynolds, said that he has “giving up on America and that he is “done with America.”
Reynolds said that he will serve his prison term before moving to Africa, where he will live for the rest of his life.
This announcement came after U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman sentenced him to six months in prison for his failure to file income tax returns. He has received two months credit for time served.
Zimbabwe
Reynolds was found guilty on four misdemeanor counts of failing to file income tax returns on more than $400,000 that he earned between 2009 and 2012.
According to court documents, most of the money came from his job as a consultant to businessmen seeking to secure business deals in Zimbabwe.
Reynolds, who acted as his own attorney, said at the trial that the money was not income but was paid to him as advances for business expenses, and therefore, it did not have to be reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
However, the judge disagreed.
Rape
Reynolds is frustrated that his two prior convictions were taken into consideration when he was sentenced to prison rather than probation.
“The question is, how long does a person have to pay for mistakes?” Reynolds asked.
Reynolds was convicted of statutory rape for having sex with a 16-year-old campaign worker back in 1995.
