Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka stated that President Yoweri Museveni deserved to be the East African President over “his commitment to the region”.
The former Vice President also accused Ugandans of “torturing” their President in reference to the uproar that has greeted Museveni’s move to remove the age-limit clause that will allow him to seek another term in 2021.
“I have always thought that Ugandans should not start torturing Mzee (President Yoweri Museveni). He should be the first President of East Africa,” Musyoka stated.
Musyoka’s surprise remarks have been received with mixed reactions with the government media in Uganda publicizing the endorsement on the front pages.
In Kenya, however, a section of NASA supporters were confused with their leader’s stand given that the Kenyan Opposition has often accused President Uhuru Kenyatta of learning “dictatorial tendencies” from the Ugandan President.
NASA leader Raila Odinga also has a strained relationship with Museveni which the former premier narrates in his book, The Flame of Freedom.
