Namwamba, who previously served as the Minister for Sports, shamed the current Cabinet Secretary in the same ministry over the failed bid to host the 2018 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN).
Kenya was first given the rights to host the celebrated sports event in 2013 and after concerted lobbying by Namwamba who headed the Sports ministry in the coalition government.
However, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) stripped Kenya’s hosting rights for failure to make adequate preparations.
“The consistent reports from our inspectors suggest the country is nowhere near ready for this assignment. We were left with little choice,” CAF official Musa Bility stated while explaining the sad decision.
The former Budalangi MP stated that the loss of the prestigious hosting rights was an embarrassment caused by senior ministry officials.
“The loss of the opportunity to host CHAN illustrates just how far backwards Kenyan sports has regressed. A sad reality and senior officials at the ministry of sports should shoulder the blame,”
“This is a shattering blow for Kenyan sports. It is very bad for Kenya, image wise and economically,” Namwamba stated.
The comments by the former minister came as a surprise given that he has endorsed President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election and has been on the front line defending the Jubilee government.
