Shocking details of 5-year-old girl abused by Asian couple

The authorities noted that the girl improved tremendously after the separation.

Testifying in the case, a psychiatrist at Kenyatta National Hospital, Dr. Josephine Omondi, told Senior Principal Magistrate at Milimani Courts, Hellen Onkwani, that the child was suffering from post traumatic stress disorder caused by child abuse.

The case was brought to the authorities attention when the girl's school principal, Bilja Shah of Montessori school, noticed that she was always coming to school with fresh injuries.

After recommending that the girl is taken to Agha Khan Hospital for a check up her parents, Keyur Navichandra and Jyoti Keyur were arrested for allegedly abusing their then 5-year-old daughter who couldn't speak or walk well at the time. This crime was reportedly committed between December 2014 and July 9, 2015.

In Kenya, child abuse is sadly prevalent but largely unreported due to the fact that it is mostly carried out by family members or individuals who are known to the child.

The first and only research ever done on child abuse in Kenya, courtesy of Childline Kenya dubbed the Child Protection Report, contains data collected between 2006-2016 on the prevalence of child abuse in Kenya. They received 33,929 child abuse cases consisting of child neglect (13,878), sexual abuse (7,832), physical abuse (7,317), child labor (3,123), emotional abuse (1,025) and child trafficking and abuse (528).

Childline Kenya is an NGO that works to stop child abuse and provide a safe environment for all children. They do this via an emergency toll-free national helpline which is monitored 24 hours a day, the National Child Helpline is 116 and the Whatsapp number is 0799873107. One can also be able to chat with them on their site.
