Kenyan writer Makena Onjerika is the official winner of the 2018 Caine Prize for African Writing.

She was nominated for her short story, Fanta Blackcurrant, which was published in Wasafiri in 2017.

An elated Makena took to her Twitter to express her gratitude for the prestigious honor saying:

“Thank you to all for the congratulations. Thank you to Caine Prize.”

Speaking to BBC Africa, Makena revealed that she was actually rooting for other shortlisted nominees and was surprised that she won the prize.

Makena drew the inspiration for her story from her time in boarding school but also explored the livelihoods of street urchins in Kenya.

Ms. Onjerika was among five African writers who had been nominated for the 2018 Caine Prize.

Last year’s winner was Sudanese poet Bushra al-Fadil who was nominated for The Story of the Girl whose birds flew away.

Kenya’s Binyavanga Wainaina, Yvonne Owuor and Okwiri Oduor are previous winners of the award; receiving their prizes in 2002, 2003 and 2014 respectively.

Congratulations to Makena!
