Are female artistes going overboard with stage outfits?
Now, I'm gonna be brutally honest here so if you're one of those people who gets offended at the slightest criticism, buckle up.
International artistes such as Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga and many others are known to perform live wearing overly naked outfits.
The embellished bodysuit has become the quintessential stage outfit for pretty much any artiste out there and since we yet to decolonize our minds, African artistes, including Kenyan artistes are quickly jumping on the trend. A while back, Tiwa Savage received loads of backlash from her fans after she decided to perform in London, alongside Wizkid wearing an overly distressed pair of shorts which revealed a good 80% of her derriere. Back at home, Akothee has not also been spared by trolls, thanks to the bodysuits she wears when performing live. However, she, (Akothee) doesn't give a rat's ass about what anyone thinks about her which is cool.
But, see, here's the thing. I have a problem with how the Kenyan artistes are doing this whole "naked stage outfit" thing. Beyonce doesn't wear some 'thingy' that looks like it was fished out of some bail in Gikomba. She trusses herself up in bodysuits that look stage-worthy; customized outfits designed for her. So, why can't Kenyan artistes do the same? Get a designer such as Sewe Kenya to tailor-make a sexy stage outfit encrusted with embellishments or sequins? If you're gonna show off that much skin on stage, at least make it worthwhile.
In case you're lost, or simply can't fathom what I'm trying to say. I'll show you an example. So, over the weekend, South African sensation Nasty C of the famed 'Particula' song was in Nairobi for the much anticipated Kaya Festival that went down at the Ngong Racecourse. The young and super talented artiste gave a stellar performance and so did his curtain raisers, including upcoming artiste, Rosa.
Clad in pantyhose, a high waisted embellished underwear paired with a matching bralette and floral platform boots, the girl twerked her way into the hearts of the boychild, thrilling everyone present at the event especially with her hit single featuring Naiboi, 'InSide'.
Now, this brings me back to the outfit. Did the outfit bring out the sex appeal? Absolutely. Do I like it? No.
While some may argue that it's just a stage outfit, and that an artiste is free to express themselves as they wish, I'd like to challenge them and make it known that, one can perform in a decent outfit and still give an outstanding show. Someone like Adele, is one of the best female artistes out there and never once have we seen her thighs. Back at home, artistes such as Avril choose to wear decent outfits for their stage performances and still have throngs of fans. Don't get me wrong though, Rosa is entitled to do and wear whatever the hell she feels like wearing.
Nakedness has been idolized in the music industry. Is it for clout? To stir up some sort of controversy? Cause they simply don't care? Cause Beyonce wore the same? Lol we may never know. But to reiterate, my point is, if you're gonna go for the naked-y look, do it with utmost class.
