The 6th edition of East Africa’s biggest fashion award, Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards 2018 went down at the Kampala Serena Hotel on Friday, 7th December.
The event was curated to celebrate and acknowledge stake holders in the fashion industry, spanning from fashion designers, to fashion bloggers, stylists, most stylish celebrities, to mention but a few. This year, the theme was ‘Fashion is Power’, aimed at sparking a dialogue on the meaning of 'African Fashion'. It was hosted by Kenya's Tracy Wanjiru and Anita Nderu and Nigeria's Mai Atafo - a bespoke fashion tailor.
Routinely, the red carpet fashion was anything but BASIC, comprising a myriad of styles, from elegant gowns to avant-garde fashion to somewhat over-the-top couture fashion.
One of the Kenyans who won big at this year’s ASFA was fashion stylist extraordinaire, Brian Babu, who can be credited for being the brains behind some of Sauti Sol’s most iconic looks. Babu has taken the less traveled road and carved a niche for himself as a leading fashion stylist, with an impressive profile, having dressed top celebrities, such as Amina Abdi, Betty Kyallo, Janet Mbugua, to mention but a few and also bagged many gigs such as styling Coke Studio Africa artistes. Evidently, his work speaks for itself and it’s no wonder, that he bagged the Stylist of the Year, Africa Award, beating Angola’s Chuck Mbevo and Ghana’s Kelvincenth.
An excited Babu took to his Instagram to share the news with his fans, posting:
“And this happened last night. as voted by you Special thanks to everyone who voted. My squad goals & for always holding it down. My clients for trusting in my talent. My family as always. Special shout out to & And most importantly to God, the giver of all this.”
Last year, the Stylist of the Year Award, Africa went to Nigeria’s Swanky Jerry.
Other Kenyans who won awards at the Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards 2018, were:
Amar Jonathan, a Kenyan fashionista, who won the Male Fashionista of the Year, Africa Award.
Kenyan Rapper, Octopizzo, who bagged the Most Stylish Male Artiste of the Year, Africa Award.
A massive congrats to all of them!
