It’s normal to overpack when going on holiday, even when we need just a few basic items.

For the majority of Kenyans, the festive season means packing bags and heading to the Coast to enjoy a few days of rest, swimming, great tropical weather and good food. If you’re planning on going to some tropical place for an exotic beach holiday, we shall help you pack so that you only carry the basics. Many are the times we pack so much, only to end up wearing the same two dresses the entire holiday, plus, if you think about it, overpacking leaves no space for you to pack the things you buy while on holiday. So, here’s what to pack.

1. A shirt dress, summery shift dress and a maxi dress.

Beach holidays can be very hot. You really don’t want to be hot all day in leggings or jeans. The most practical outfits are those that are airy and voluminous and made from light fabric. If you prefer pants to dresses, feel free to pack light pants made of fabrics like linen or chiffon. An example is palazzo pants for example or chic high waisted pants that are light, which you can pair with crop tops.

2. Nice, decent denim shorts + light blouses or decent tank tops.

You will probably do a bit of site seeing or boat rides or even hit the beach bar for a few Pinacoladas. Shorts are a great outfit as you can wear your bikini underneath and if you feel like going for a dip in the pool or ocean, you can easily remove them, swim and slip them back on.

3. A nice bikini and silk scarf.

We all know that a bikini is definitely a must-carry! Don’t forget your bikini cover up if you want to comfortably walk around the beach or pool area without getting weird stares. A silk scarf is also important as it can be used for many things; you could use it as a sarong, picnic blanket by the beach, tie it on your hair etc.

4. A nice dress that you can wear when going for dinner.

If you’re staying at an upscale hotel, you will find sometimes, that there’s a dinner dress code. Some hotels will not allow guests to go for dinner in shorts and flip flops for instance. I guess it is basic courtesy to look presentable and decent when eating around other people anyway. Do carry a nice and decent dinner dress say a cute little white or black dress which you can pair with block heels or wedges. Don’t even bother to carry high heels for your beach holiday even if you plan on going out. Block heels will do.

5. If you like to work out, carry your work out clothes.

A pair of sport shoes, yoga pants and a sports bra for you morning beach jogs or training at the hotel gym.

6. Accessories.

Earrings, headbands, beach bag, a cute straw bag or crossbody bag where you can put your phone and lip balm during the day as you move around, sunglasses, a straw hat, beach sandals and lastly, don’t forget basic makeup and your moisturizer and sunscreen you have to slay for the gram right?

7. While this is not something you need to pack, you might wanna choose a braid style for your beach holiday.

Unless you want to be so hot in your wig all day? Braids are super practical as you can swim in them, they allow your scalp to breathe and you don’t have to worry about styling them.
