Why Sunday is the most dangerous day of the week to travel in Kenya

Monday was the safest day of travel.

According to accident data released by the National Transport and Safety Authority, published in the Business Daily, Sundays are the most dangerous day of the week to travel in Kenya.

595 deaths occurred on Sundays in 2017.

In 2016, the highest number of deaths were from Saturdays- 545.

NTSA didn't provide additional information as to why the fatalities occurred on Sundays but the theory is that a combination of weekend fatigue and a rush to get back to work could be the reason.

Road fatality numbers also rose on Tuesday in 2017. Where 364 deaths occurred this year while 322 deaths occurred in 2016.

Monday was considered the safest day of the week to travel as the lowest number of fatalities were recorded.

Majority of the fatalities occurred at 9pm where 278 deaths were recorded in 2017.

December had the highest number of road crash fatalities with 356 deaths in 2017. The precious year had 305 deaths.

June was the safest month with 178 deaths.

The most common occurring road crash was the hit-and-run where 609 cases were on record in 2017, followed by loss of vehicle control which had 528 cases and poor overtaking at 320 cases.

28% of road accidents were attributed to private cars. This was the highest on record, while commercial vehicles contributed to 24%. Motorbikes caused 17% of road crashes.

NTSA showed that the Nairobi-Mombasa highway was the deadliest, followed by Nakuru-Eldoret then Thika Highway.
