Recipe Ingredients

  • 1/2 kg groundnuts, roasted and peeled
  • 3 cups hot water
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 1 tomato diced
  • Salt to taste
  • Greens (Spinach/Kales)
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 2 cloves of garlic, finely crushed


  1. Using a food processor/ grinding stone/ mortar and pestle grind the groundnuts to almost peanut butter like consistency.
  2. Once ground, mix the butter with the hot water and stir to dissolve.
  3. In a saucepan and over very low heat bring the groundnut sauce to a boil.
  4. Let the sauce simmer uncovered over low heat for 30 minutes
  5. Heat two tablespoons of vegetable oil in a cooking pot and the same amount of water, turn up the heat and add the garlic. Let cook until garlic turns milky.
  6. Add the peanut paste and stir.
  7. Fry the onion in another pot till it turns brown then add tomatoes, salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Add the peanut mix once the tomatoes are cooked and some little water too to prevent the mixture from sticking to the surface.
  9. Taste for seasoning and adjust accordingly.
  10. As for the consistency of the sauce you can add more hot water to thin it out.
  11. Add the peanut butter mixture to the greens. Season to taste. Simmer on very low heat until greens are tender.
  12. You can serve it with Ugali or Matoke. (Cooked bananas).
