Other than being a great source of flavor, some spices can actually aid in your weight loss.

Turmeric

According to a study done in 2009 in Tufts University, mice that were fed curcumin which is the active ingredient in turmeric lost more fat than those on the same diet with no curcumin. Tumeric is known to increase body heat which leads to increased metabolism.

Cinnamon

Much as it is an acquired taste, Cinnamon is great for curbing cravings and balancing blood sugar which in turn will help you stay fuller for longer. Plus, it makes really great pastries, tea fragrance and goes really well with cottage cheese.

Cayenne

Did you know that adding cayenne pepper in your food can help you burn up to 100 calories per meal? Just like turmeric, cayenne spice warms up your body and boosts metabolism.

Cumin

Most probably the most commonly used spice in Kenya after black pepper, pilau masala and garlic, cumin spice does more than up your white sauce game. Just a teaspoon added to your meal could help you burn up to three times the calories you would have without it.

Ginger

You could call it the super spice. Ginger, just like cinnamon helps to prevent a spike in your sugar levels after a carb rich meal while at the same time it has similar calorie burning properties like turmeric and cayenne pepper.

Black Pepper

Black pepper not only prevents weight gain by blocking the formation of new fat cells it also has the same fat burning properties like cayenne and turmeric.

Cardamom
