Estates in Nairobi with the highest HIV/AIDS rate revealed

Kenya has an average HIV prevalence rate of 6 percent with about 1.6 million people living with HIV.

A new study has now revealed the top estates in Nairobi with the highest number of prostitutes infected with HIV.

They include Embakasi, Lang’ata and Dagoretti respectively.

Out of all these estates, Embakasi recorded the highest number of individuals infected with HIV with 6 percent of those tested being HIV positive.

Dagoretti was the next hot spot, with 5.6 percent of the participants being HIV positive.

Despite Lang’ata having the least number of tested participants, it recorded the highest number of people infected with HIV at 5.5 percent.

The study aimed at increasing the number of high risk people who know their HIV status.

3 percent of those that were tested were found to be HIV positive.

The highest number of participants came from Ruaraka and Starehe with more than 1000 participants.

Embakasi recorded a total of 850 participants while the least number of participants came from Lang’ata and Dagoretti.

Ruaraka and Starehe recorded the least number of HIV positive people at 3.1 percent and 1.9 percent.

There are 29,494 female prostitutes in Nairobi, 11,042 male prostitutes and 6,216 drug injectors with HIV prevalence of 29.3 percent, 18.2 percent and 18.3 percent respectively.

The campaign testing was carried out in Ruaraka, Starehe, Embakasi, Kasarani, Makadara, Westlands, Kamukunji, Dagoretti and Lang’ata.

It was done by the Nairobi County government, UNAIDS – Nairobi, the Ministry of health and the University of Maryland of the US.

The findings were presented at the 9 IAS Conference on HIV science.

Out of the 6,602 people tested majority of them were aged between 16 to 57 years old.
