Everything We Know About His Dark Materials Season 2

At the very least, the HBO/BBC series His Dark Materials was always going to be a two-season show. As the events of the second season pick up moments after the first, the filmmakers immediately recognized the need for continuity, and were given the order for 2 seasons back-to-back before season 1 even began filming.

What to Know About 'His Dark Materials' Season 2

Executive producer Jane Tranter told Entertainment Weekly about the continuity concern that spurred the two-season order: lead actress, Dafne Keen, 14, who plays Lyra, 12. Suddenly [she's] six inches taller and theyre a different shape and their voices are different," said Tranter, voicing the team's concern that Keen would age out of her role. "Our feeling was we really couldnt leave more than a very small gap between the end of when Dafne Keen finished filming, which was December 2018, and when she started again, July 2019.

That means the second season of the show is already done filming! Whoa.

Heres everything else we know about it.

No official date has been announced, but we can do some quick math. Given the gap between season 1s wrap and season 1s premiere (11 months), we may be seeing season 2 hit HBO as early as this coming spring 2020; more likely, though, it'll come out around the same time next yearlate fall, early winter.

The season will pick up exactly where season 1 ends: like, hours after. Season 1 is currently following the events of the first book of the Dark Materials series, Northern Lights. Season 2 will take as its guiding source material from the middle installment of the trilogy, The Subtle Knife. That book continues the adventures of Lyra as she digs deeper into Dust and furthers the search for her father. (Anything more than that will just be spoiler territory.)

Movie database IMDB can prove difficult in predicting the fate of charactersand understandably so. Acting giants James McAvoy and Lin-Manuel Miranda have only been listed for a few episodes each. So it hasn't been if the two big stars will be back. Unless you follow Miranda on twitter, of course. Did he spoil his own return? Oh well.

Notable newcomers include Andrew Scott as Colonel John Parry and Amir Wilson as his son Will Parry. You probably know Scott as Moriarty in the BBC series Sherlock. Scott has also appeared in Fleabag (Hot Priest) and Black Mirror (a kidnapper).

No word yet, but, again, this is a trilogy. And given the expansiveness of the Dark Materials world(s), theres plenty of fodder for expansion. Though, expansion might be a dirty word in a post Game of Thrones world.
