While Hannibal was airing, the show accrued a passionate fanbase, many of whom believed that the intense, psychologically complex relationship between Hannibal Lecter ( Mads Mikkelsen ) and criminal profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) was romantic in nature. Now, Fuller has all-but-confirmed that this unlikely pairing is canon, and revealed that Lecter's sexuality is a lot less binary than some viewers might have assumed.

"From our very first meeting with Mads, he redefined the character immediately for me because hes the devil. He is this thing both of the world and outside of the world. So for me, the devil is pansexual ," he said. "I think Will Graham is a heterosexual character, but sexuality is fluid, and I think it would have to be a conversation where we would sit down and try to find the most authentic expression of their relationship now."

Hannibal has enjoyed a renewed popularity since all three seasons began streaming on Netflix, so much so that Fuller's long-deferred vision of a fourth season might actually, finally happen . And if it does, the nuances of the connection between Lecter and Graham are going to be key to the plot although, this being Hannibal, fans shouldn't expect a happily-ever-after for the two characters.

"Because of the nature of what would be happening in season four in terms of the grander manipulations that Hannibal has on Will Grahams mind, I don't think Hannibal would want to have sex with Will if Will wasn't in his right mind, and Will wont be in his right mind in season four," said Fuller.
