After two solo films and three other appearances throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Disney-Sony partnership that allowed the two studios to share the rights to Spider-Man appears to have ended due to a financial dispute, according to a report from Deadline . Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, the person most responsible for the MCU's success, will no longer be the chief creative on the Spider-Man films as a result.
The arrangement began when Marvel introduced their version of Spider-Manof course played by Tom Hollandin 2016's Captain America: Civil War. This was the result of the two studios brokering a deal that allowed the MCU to use Spider-Man after Sony's last versionThe Amazing Spider-Man, with Andrew Garfield as Peter Parkerfell flat with both audiences and critics.
Marvel's two Spider-Man movies have both been enormous commercial and critical successes. In fact, Far From Home just recently became Sony's highest-grossing film of all time. Now, the studio seems to think they can mess with that formula.
Without getting too into the nitty gritty, the Deadline report paints a picture that Disney was seeking a 50/50 co-financing agreement with Sony for the films, an offer that Sony declined outright. As the report states, "Sony just simply didnt want to share its biggest franchise."
Sony is said to be planning two more Spider-Man movies with Tom Holland and director Jon Watts front-and-center, though it's unknown how this will now figure, granted how intertwined the movies have been with Nick Fury, Happy Hogan, Iron Man, and other central MCU characters. You'd imagine that Sony would now attempt to tie Spider-Man in with their other properties, like last year's Venom and Into The Spider-Verse, but with a lack of connection there, things look spotty and questionable at best.
As the report states, Feige is going to be quite busy in the next few years now that Disney and 20th Century Fox have merged, and he's able to work Deadpool and the X-Men into his universe. But it also states that Spider-Man, possibly the most famous Marvel character, is his favorite; he would've loved to continue taking the time to work it out.
Maybe there's a chance that both studios come to an agreement in the futureFar From Home set that version of Spider-Man up for big things inside that universe. Tinkering with a good thinga great thingwould seem to be a fairly major mistake.
