"It's been 10 years since I've seen my face, and my face has changed," he says. "I'm 40 years old now, so I've aged, and I want to see how I look without a beard." He adds that met his wife 7 years ago, and so she has never seen him without facial hair.

One of the unexpected side effects of the pandemic has been just how many of us have taken this unexpected downtime to adopt new looks, with a lot of guys choosing to try to grow out their facial hair in lockdown. For professional beard model Carlos Costa, however, it's the opposite: he wants to shave off his signature look .

Carlos starts by using a beard trimmer to mow the great bushy beard all the way down to stubble, then wet shaves the rest (cutting himself once or twice, which is understandable if you haven't handled a razor in more than a decade).
When he's finished, he appears quietly surprised and delighted by the results. "Wow," he says. "I don't remember myself like this. Goodness me."
His wife Jenna, however, has a little bit more of an outspoken reaction when she first sees his transformation: "What the fuck?"

"That is weird," she continues, after some nervous laughter. "Oh my god, I can't look at you... it doesn't look like you."
Once she gets over the shock, however, she is just fascinated by how different he looks. "Actually, you look a bit younger," she says. "Do you know what's weird, it's like, I can see your lips move, and I don't think I've ever actually seen how you talk."
Luckily, she doesn't seem to hate it. Although Carlos will have plenty of time to grow the beard back, should he end up missing it.
