Kenyan motorists will soon start to pay user fees on major highways as the government moves to introduce tolling on its roads
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure is in negotiations with private investors for building and maintaining major highways by March next year.
According to Infrastructure PS, John Mosonik, the deal will pave the way for the introduction of toll stations where investors will recover their investment from fees paid by motorists for use of the roads.

The move will add to the tax burden on Kenyans who are already paying for the building and maintenance of roads through a levy that is included in petroleum pump prices.
Motorists pay Sh18 road maintenance levy per litre of diesel or petrol for road use.
According to the ministry Sh380 billion is needed to expand and maintain roads every year.

PS Mosonik said the Private Public Partnership Unit, a department under Treasury, will oversee the financing of roads and bridge projects that will spur economic growth.
