Is this the new age Academy?

This has to be the most unorthodox list of winners in the history of Oscars

Viola Davis is the 23rd person in the history to have ever earned the triple crown in the film industry.

In what one could easily call an eccentric awarding of honors, the Oscars 2017 saw more black people receive awards for their roles in the 2016 productions. Beyond experiencing the biggest fail in Oscar history, where Damien Chazelle’s La La Land was wrongfully landed the Oscar for Best Picture only to later give it to Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight, here’s a list of the memorable happenings at the Academy Awards 2017.

1. Mahershala Ali and Viola Davis became the first black people to win Best Leading Actor and Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars for their roles in all black movies, Moonlight and Fences.

2. After winning the Best Foreign Language Film, Director Asghar Farhadi boycotted the Oscars stating that he’s absence at the awards is in respect to his people who were insulted by immigrants ban that was recently brought up. In a statement that was read as his acceptance speech he said, "It's a great honor to be receiving this valuable award for the second time. I would like to thank the members of the Academy, my crew in Iran, my producer , Cohen Media, Amazon and my fellow nominees in the foreign film category. I'm sorry I'm not with you tonight. My absence is out of respect for the people of my country and those of other six nations whom have been disrespected by the inhumane law that bans entry of immigrants to the U.S. Dividing the world into the us and our enemies categories creates fear. A deceitful justification for aggression and war. These wars prevent democracy and human rights in countries which have themselves been victims of aggression. Film-makers can turn their cameras to capture shared human qualities and break stereotypes of various nationalities and religions. They create empathy between us and others. An empathy which we need today more than ever."

3. What a defining moment it was when NASA scientist, Katherine Johnson made an appearance at the awards. She was one of the NASA research mathematicians portrayed in the Oscar-nominated film Hidden Figures. Upon her appearance, she received a standing ovation, her Oscar moment at the age of 98. Her story is told in the Oscar nominated film, Hidden Figures. Johnson was instrumental in Alan Shepard's journey to become the first American in space and in John Glenn's mission to become the first American to orbit the Earth.

4. Mahershala Ali also became the first Muslim actor to ever win an Oscar. He took home the first Oscar of the night, securing the best supporting actor trophy for his role as Juan in Best Picture "Moonlight."

5. Viola Davis became the first black woman to ever win an Oscar, Emmy and Tony awards. With her win for her work in the 2016 film “Fences,” Davis became the 23rd person to complete the triple crown of acting and the first black woman to be crowned with such accolades.

6. Also, Moonlight also became the first film with an all-black cast to win the Best Picture at the Oscars
