How to get rid of inappropriate crushes

Pick a struggle, cut off the feels.

Inappropriate crushes can be quite embarrassing.

The heart wants what it wants and that’s just dandy but sometimes they can be so most inappropriate. It’s happened to the best of us. From your brother’s best friend to your Philosophy lecturer, you don’t get to decide who your heart desires. Chances are, these are the most potent crushes ever and deserve a bit more attention than the usual ones. Here's how to stop

1. Take a chill pill

Seriously, take a seat off your high horse and get real about your feelings. Think about your emotions with a clear mind and identify what they are before you make a move.

2. Find out why your crush is such a bad idea

Label all the warning bells that come with the confession that you’re in love and find out why your crush is such a bad idea. Instead of looking at why you like your crush that much, focus on why you shouldn’t and the consequences that come with it.

3. Consider your reputation

Your love life is your personal business until it starts infringing on other people’s and gives you a bad name. Rarely do scandalous relationships last and considering how the people around you will react is important. Remember, crushing on your best friend’s boyfriend is a different kind of inappropriate from crushing on an elderly.

4. Casualties

It sucks to be the victim of a love gone foul. Nobody wants to be played, not even you. It’s important to look at the people who’ll be hurt and the extents of it before pursuing your crush.

5. Picture falling out

What happens if it doesn’t work out between the two of you? Are you ready for the backlash that will come with your break up? What’s the worst that could happen if you left each other? Do you know how your crush reacts to pressure? Asking yourself such important questions allow you to know if you're ready to act on your feelings or you're way in over your head.

Now that you know that you can’t prolong your crush, what do you do next?

1. Give yourself time

Out of sight out of mind. Give yourself time away from your crush to find your balance and clear your mind. This will allow you to be objective about your feelings.

2. Socialize

Go out and meet new people. There are so many interesting people out there ready who’ll probably want to date you too. Open your mind to suggestions and dates. Who knows, you might find a new flame.

3. Face it

Sometimes, you can’t deny just how deeply you feel for someone. In that case, face your crush and set things right. Be honest and say what you’re feelings and acknowledge that you know it’s bad idea. This will allow you closure and make it an easier burden to carry
