Police have launched a manhunt for 14 prisoners who escaped while being transported from Thika to Industrial Area Remand Prison, Nairobi.

The 17 allegedly tore through the grills on the prison van and jumped out of the car and are now at large.
All the suspects are facing robbery with violence charges which is considered a hardcore criminal act.
Two other prisoners - Amos Wanyoike Wanjiru and James Kamau - who were shot while trying to escape were on Monday arraigned in court and charged with attempting to escape lawful arrest.

The police have released the names of the escaped prisoners as: Sharif Hassan Juma, Davis Jonathan Kimani, Sebastian Mburu Kanyotu, Peter Gitau Macharia, Isaac Nganga Wainaina, Daniel Njuguna, Moses Njoroge, Andrew Kiiti Makau, Julius Wachira Wambui, Robert Maziwa Mose, Joshua Michael Okundi, Alexander Muroithi Irungu, Samuel Chege Themba, Johnson Kamau Ndegwa, Samuel Ngugi Maina, Feonard Omondi Opiyo and Josiah Mwangi Wairimu.
The prisoners were taken from Thika West, Thika East, Juja, Ruiru and Muranga and were being transported to Nairobi for various court appearances through the week.
