20-year-old Rebecca Atieno had been kicked out of her house the previous night and went to Uhuru Park to relax during the day.
“My boss claimed that I was too slow to work at such a place, I felt like she was forcing me to leave the job. I didn’t have anywhere else to go,” Atieno said.
Alone and determined
After feeling a call of nature, Atieno realized she could not afford to pay Ksh10 to be allowed to use the public toilet and so she surrendered her phone.
Her water broke and reeling in pain she stood next to a tree only for her to realize no one was around to help her.
30 minutes later baby hope was born. Atieno wrapped her child in her sweater before a good samaritan called in health services and she was taken to the Kenyatta National Hospital.
Conquered
Atieno said that despite the challenges she encountered, she feels like she has already passed the biggest test and that is the safe delivery of her baby.
The young mother said that she had already separated from the father of her child and she had no relatives in Nairobi.
