3 Al Shabaab militants shot dead
The militants attacked the Boarder Patrol Unit
According to reports, the terrorists engaged police in a fire exchange at Yumbis Border Patrol Unit in Garissa.
A statement by Police Spokesperson Charles Owino said that all officers were safe after the night incident and a combined team of Security Agencies is pursuing some of the militants who escaped.
“We wish to inform the public that Yumbis Border Patrol Unit camp Fafi Sub-County of Garisa was attacked last night by suspected Al Shabaab militants. Our officers effectively engaged them and with quick reinforcement from Special Forces, the attackers were repulsed,” read part of the statement.
The militants are said to have destroyed a communications mast that serves the region, before they launched the attack on the police unit.
Police officers killed
This comes barely a week after 12 police officers were killed in Wajir, when their vehicle ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at Konton area near the Somalia border.
