5 arrested on suspicion of digging tunnel and stealing from bank

Police in Kitui have arrested 5 suspects over Ksh1.5 million robbery at a bank where a tunnel was dug at the weekend.

The five are due in court on Monday over the incident which took place at Financial Services Association (FSA) bank located in Itoleka, Kitui.

According to police, the gang took two days to dig the tunnel unnoticed until on Sunday morning when the watchman on duty noticed the burrow leading to the strong room.

Also in custody is a night guard who was on duty on Friday after he alleged that he did not hear any commotion.

Equipment left at crime scene

Reports by the Nation claim that bank employees kept cash in their office desk drawers instead of using the bank’s safes.

Sleuths are also seeking to establish how the suspects managed to dig the tunnel and break into the banking hall unnoticed.

Kitui Central Deputy OCPD Edward Legei said the bank’s night guard discovered the huge hole on the wall before he informed the police on Saturday morning.
