At least six people have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident involving a matatu and a canter along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway on Saturday night.

10 others were rushed to hospital in critical condition with fears that the number of casualties could rise.

Reports indicate that the 14 seater matatu collided head-on with a canter heading in the opposite direction at the notorious Kinubgi stretch black spot that has claimed many lives.

Witnesses stated that the crash happened at around 8@0 pm on Saturday night after the driver of the matatu attempted to overtake a convoy of vehicles before ramming into the canter.

An eyewitness recounted that "The matatu driver headed towards Nairobi swerved to the right, crashing into a lorry coming from the opposite direction".

Rescue efforts were slowed down as several people were left trapped in the mangled wreck in what witnesses described as a horrifying scene.

Naivasha Sub-County Deputy Police Commander John Kwasa confirmed the incident, stating that five people died on the spot while a sixth person succumbed to injuries while being rushed to hospital.

Among the dead are drivers of the two vehicles.

"The matatu driver died while being rushed to the Naivasha-based healthy facility," he said.

Kwasa faulted the matatu driver for the tragic crash, stating that initial investigations indicate that he dot adhere to traffic rules while overtaking.

"Initial investigations indicate the matatu driver was at fault, occasioning the accident," added Mr Kwasa.
