President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to name the next IG anytime from now after Boinnet’s term ended on Monday.
The IG, however, is still in office awaiting to handover after the head of state has made a decision.
The Standard on Wednesday quoted its sources indicating that the military, the National Intelligence Service (NIS), and the National Police Service (NPS) were some of the institutions lobbying for one of their own to get the job.
Former and current NIS officers
Boinnet was picked from NIS in 2015 and has had a relatively successful term which the NIS is using to push for another intelligence man to head the police.
The former and current spies being considered for the post include Nicodemus Musyoka, Hillary Mutiambai, and Isaac Ochieng.
Musyoka is currently in charge of border control at NIS while Mutiambai heads the powerful counter-terrorism unit. Ochieng is a former NIS officer currently serving as Kenya’s ambassador to Brazil.
From the military, Brigadier Fredrick Leuria is among those said to be in the race while the police service has Deputy Inspector General of the GSU Noor Gabow and police spokesman Charles Owino as possible successors.
If Kenyatta’s pick is from the intelligence sector, the next IG would join a list of senior officers picked by the head of state in strategic organisations including the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji and EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak.
