Woman commits suicide after being diagnosed with cancer

A woman has committed suicide after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Reports claimed that the 40-year-old woman hanged herself in her sister's house in Kasarani estate.

Family members revealed that the woman committed suicide after reaching home from Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) where she had gone for treatment.

Purity Muthoni had been living in Olkalau where she developed growth in one of her breasts but she had been undergoing treatment in different hospitals before she was diagnosed with the disease.

Speaking on the incident, Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru said: “According to the sister, the deceased received results that she was suffering from breast cancer and she went into depression before committing suicide.”

Cancer diagnosis

According to neighbours, Ms Muthoni started undergoing treatment in various hospitals and was misdiagnosed with other ailments until doctors at KNH diagnosed her with breast cancer.

Neighbours said that Ms Muthoni had been living with her sister who worked in one of the flower farms in a Naivasha estate.

Ms Muthoni is said to have waited until the sister had gone to work before she used a rope to commit suicide after telling her friends that she did not want to undergo the pain other cancer victims had gone through.

Confirming the incident, Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru said police had collected her body and taken it to the Naivasha Mortuary.

The Kenya Cancer network statistics show that 30 percent of cancers are curable if detected early, and they are also treatable with prolonged survival if detected early.
