Akon’s Message to Kenya [VIDEO]
Popular singer had this to tell Kenya during an international conference...
Speaking during the 2017 Youth Conneckt Africa Summit, Akon challenged Africa about branding itself positively to the globe.
He highlighted that it was unfortunate that the continent was its own enemy noting that Africans have been sending out numerous negative stories concerning it.
According to the Lonely hitmaker, Africa ought to borrow a leaf from the United States of America which made itself attractive to the whole world by branding itself well.
“This world is all about branding and marketing. The number one branders in the universe is the United State. They made United State seem like it is the best place in the world to be. It is the land of the free, home of the brave. I go there chasing and find my dreams,” he said.
In his message to Kenya Akon noted that the Kenyan media had made the country seem unsafe following the terrorist attacks it had widely reported on.
“When you look at places like Kenya for instance that I know of one or two terrorist attacks… but it was everywhere. And now everywhere people were afraid of going to Kenya because somebody shot up the mall.
“But when you look online there were over 25,000 attacks in the US but you only know of five or six,” he said.
He challenged directors, filmmakers, entertainers and the press to take up the job of redefining how people think about Africa.
“One of the problems we have in Africa is that when something happens ,the press is quick to put out a negative energy and story. And the story goes on the internet then other broadcasting systems take it and they post it,” Akon mentioned.
The singer noted that though there are so many bad things happening in the US, they have chosen to hide them from the world.
The rapper who doubles up as a businessman emphasised that Africans ought to tell their own stories and do it with ‘country integrity’.
“No one puts their family business out in the streets,” he added.
