Anyang Nyong’o buys newspaper advert to apologise for Raila heckling in Kisumu

Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o on Thursday bought advertising space on a national daily to apologise for Monday’s heckling of ODM Leader Raila Odinga.

Odinga was heckled while launching an industrial park in Muhoroni, which is Nyong’o’s county of Kisumu.

The Kisumu county boss those who heckled Odinga had been hired and were part of a “band” that had planned to resist development in the lakeside county.

It is regrettable that a small band of engineered “naysayers” who have deliberately decided to resist development in the county as a whole purely for political mileage decided to embarrass our guests. For this I apologise,” Nyong’o said in the newspaper ad.

He added that he was not able to attend the function as he had a pre-arranged trip to Denmark for county development-related matters.

On Monday, residents of Kango village protested a project meant to built an industrial park on a contested piece of land currently owned by the Kisumu County Government.

The land in question initially belonged to the residents who were relocated due to persistent flooding in the area. It was then taken over by the Kisumu Municipal Council and later transferred to the Kisumu county government which agreed to the industrial project as part of the goodies promised by President Uhuru Kenyatta in the Nyanza region.

Why are you embarrassing me? I am bringing development yet you are not keen on the projects that will benefit you”.

"There is no need of SGR bringing goods to Kisumu from Mombasa then going back empty handed. We must ensure through economic zones that whenever they bring goods, they go back with it to enhance trade," Odinga said on Monday as security agencies intercepted the protesters.
