Awkward moment as Sonko makes sweet offer to Anne Kiguta during TV interview

TV anchor left speechless

Awkward moment as Mike Sonko offers Deputy Governor position to Anne Kiguta during punchline interview

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Sunday night caused an awkward moment after he announced that he was considering naming TV presenter Anne Kiguta as the city’s deputy governor.

Kiguta had put Sonko to task over delays in naming a deputy Governor Nairobi – more than 18 months after the position fell vacant.

Multiple individuals have come out to allege you routinely use tactics of intimidation harassment to silence anyone who is critical of how you run the county. They also say that’s why you have delayed in naming a deputy governor so you are not challenged,” Kiguta asked.

There is no law that can force me to appoint a deputy governor. It is still in the Senate but I can assure Kenyans that once it is passed, I will appoint a DG. I already have one in mind I am only waiting for that law to be passed,” Sonko said.

Who do you have in mind now, Governor,” the anchor went on.

You, are you forgetting you were in the shortlist,” Sonko responded.

Kiguta appeared surprised by the response, maintaining a loud silence for a few seconds before Sonko broke the ice with an awkward laughter.

The Nairobi county boss has over the last eighteen months engaged with a back and fourth regarding his choice of deputy governor.

Last year, he nominated exiled lawyer and activist Miguna Miguna – prompting an uproar by the Jubilee leadership.

Miguna’s nomination was quickly quashed by the Nairobi County Assembly.

In August, Sonko announced that he had decided that the DG would have to be a woman – naming Agnes Kagure, Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, Karen Nyamu and Jane Weru as the shortlisted candidates.
