Officers who arrested their colleagues said that Kahindi, a superintendent of police traveled from his work station in Bungoma with the juniors for a mission to “clean” the fake money.
Detectives said that they nabbed the three with 415 leaves of 100 US dollar bills when they stopped them.
Police said they were tipped off that the officers were carrying fake cash when they arrested them travelling a saloon car.
Fake Money found
The suspects were apprehended by police who had prior knowledge on the mission before striking.
The officers recovered 41,500 fake US dollars (Ksh4.3 million) and Ksh2,000 fake Kenyan currency from the DCIO’s pockets.
Detectives said that the three were arrested at gunpoint since they were armed.
The two juniors stated they were asked by Kahindi to follow him to Busia but they did not know his mission.
DCI's Nairobi team
Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti sent a team from Nairobi to Busia to take over the probe into the incident.
This comes in the backdrop of an increased flow of fake money in the country.
Police noted that the fake currencies are in circulation in major towns as syndicates shy from operating in Nairobi.
Last week, three men were arrested in Machakos for being in possession of fake 1,000 new notes of Kenyan currency.
