Shoppers in a Kenyan supermarket during the 2018 festive season

Two shoppers were shot and succumbed to injuries during a robbery in a supermarket at Makutano area Kirinyaga County.

According to survivors, the robbers brandishing AK-47 assault rifles made their way into the supermarket at around 7 p.m. in the evening and begun shooting indiscriminately.

Ms Carol Kasiva, 32 and 38-year-old John Nduati were hit by the bullets and unfortunately succumbed to their injuries.

Owners of the store, Mr Michael Njeru and his wife Rodah Karimi, also sustained injuries during the attack and were rushed to Mwea Mission Hospital where they were stabilized.

A number of other shoppers who were injured during the raid were taken to the White Rose Hospital at Wamumu area.

Kasiva shot dead right in front of her mother

Ms Kasiva's mother, Rahab Mbaika, was with her during the attack and conveyed that: "One of the gangsters shot my daughter on the left leg and she collapsed. It was so terrifying, I escaped death by a whisker."

Mwea West police boss Joseph Matiku confirmed the report saying that the police had recovered CCTV footage from the supermarket to help identify the robbers.

"We are tracking down the gangsters who fled towards Ngurubani town. We shall not rest until we arrest the culprits who killed innocent customers," he stated.

Kirinyaga county is set to host the 2019 Devolution Conference starting on Monday March 4, 2019 and lasting until Friday of the same week.

All 47 counties are said to have contributed Sh2 million to fund the conference with President Uhuru Kenyatta, his deputy William Ruto and Special AU envoy Raila Odinga all expected to attend.
