Brand of expired repackaged rice exposed

Bags of expired rice busted by DCI in Kariobangi

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday exposed a cartel in Nairobi that has been repackaging expired rice for sale.

The cartel that operates from Kariobangi had tonnes of the unsafe rice in a warehouse where they repacked it into bags bearing the brand name "Red Rose".

DCI boss George Kinoti told reporters that a number of suspects had been arrested during the raid while the owners of the go-down remained at large.

He added that the owners of the go-down had been identified as Kimende Stores but the owners were yet to be arrested.

DCI camping at Mombasa KRA offices

In a separate incident, a section of DCI officers camped at the Mombasa Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) offices on investigations over tax evasion.

The stand-off is said to have caused panic among the workers though police bosses insisted it was a routine check.
