After investigating her disappearance the DCI claimed that Ms Mwatha had been in communication with a man Alexander Gitau Gikonya who was in Isiolo.

The statement signed by DCI George Kinoti disclosed that Ms Mwatha was pregnant and communication between her and Mr Gikonya was on how to procure an abortion.
Unidentified body
Ms Mwatha is said to have visited New Njiru Community Centre a clinic in Dandora phase I where police believe she paid Ksh6,000 for the abortion.
Detectives who were probing the case stated that they believed Ms Mwatha died in the clinic and the body was transferred to the City Mortuary on February 7 at 4:42am.
Records at the City Mortuary backed this statement by the DCI, although the body was booked under a different name.

City Mortuary is said to have had records which indicated that the body had been brought in by a vehicle KBP 677B.
Arrests
Six people suspected to have been part of the procedure have been arrested.
Among those in custody are a doctor and the owner of the medical clinic in Dandora where the abortion was procured and Mr Gikonyo.

Police Spokesman Charles Owino stated that Ms Mwatha had been taken to KNH where they were informed that she was dead almost an hour earlier.
“The officials sought a letter from KNH to enable them to book the body at the City Mortuary, which they got,” said Police Spokesman Charles Owino.
They apparently explained to KNH officials that Caroline had severe diarrhea that led to complications and her subsequent death.
