The Nation reported its sources indicating that DP had asked President Kenyatta to wear Jubilee party colors and campaign for McDonald Mariga in Kibra – as a condition for lobbying MPs to pass a law adding the country’s debt ceiling to Sh9 trillion.
However, the story appears to have rubbed Ruto the wrong way, not only trashing the media company – but also picking the journalist who heads the paper’s editorial decision-making.
The DP said he had personally chaired the Intergovernmental Budget and Economic Council (IBEC) that made the decision to introduce a higher ceiling – and challenged Makotsi to form a political party and face him in the 2022 presidential race.
“FAKE NEWS at it again! I chaired the IBEC meeting that approved the matter way before it came to parliament. Unfortunately for nation Uhuruto is inseparable. They should either register as a political party then compete with Jubilee or operate a gutter journal for Makotsi to run,” he said in a tweet.
The DP has in the recent past employed a new strategy of attacking the credibility of mainstream news through his Twitter handle.
The tactics appear to borrow from the controversial style used by US President Donald Trump who has challenged the norms of presidential behavior of using his Twitter handle to take on real and imagined enemies.
