Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji has ordered the immediate arrest of prominent city billionaire Humphrey Kariuki who will face charges of tax evasion.

Kariuki who owns several business in the country, has landed in trouble over alleged failure by two of his companies to pay the relevant taxes.

Kariuki and 8 employees and directors of his two companies, Wines of the World Limited (WoW) and Africa Spirits Limited, are also accused of engaging in fraudulent activity.

The billionaire's troubles started early this year when detectives led by Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet and DCI boss George Kinoti led a raid on Africa Spirits factory and found 21 million counterfeit excise stamps and 312,000 litres of what they termed as illicit alcoholic products.

Africa Spirits Limited manufactures popular alcoholic spirits such as Blue Moon Vodka and Legend Brandy.

WoW Ltd, on the other hand, distributes high-end alcoholic brands such as Jack Daniels, Bacardi, Famous Grouse, William Lawson, Brugal rum, among others.

Kariuki's empire includes the The Hub Mall in Karen, the luxurious Mt Kenya Safari Club, Dalbit Petroleum (one of the largest oil distributors in East and Southern Africa), among others.

Dalbit Petroleum recently grabbed headlines after it won a Sh 796m tender to fuel United Nations' planes in Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
