Drama ensued in Kitale after a drunk student was caught in the act performing an abortion.

Ministry of Health officers who were conducting routine inspection of private clinics in the town were attracted by loud screams emanating from a clinic where an abortion was underway.

The officers who responded to the distress calls found an intoxicated man who claimed to be a graduate of the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) performing an abortion on a pregnant lady.

Reports indicate that the lady walked into the clinic for routine check-up only for the drunk attendant to perform an abortion on her.

She was rushed to Kitale County Referral Hospital in critical condition while the man was taken into police custody and will be arraignaed in court on Monday.

It was not immediately clear if the fetus survived the risky procedure in the hands of the drunk attendant who claimed that he has been working at the Sirikwa Medical Laboratories since March 2019

Dr. Jonathan Buturu, an officer from the Clinical Officers Council who responded to the distress call told journalists that they “found someone who purports to be a nurse actually conducting an abortion and managed to seize him”.

"We have to see the papers, we have to confirm everything but the way he is, he is drunk so we can't even trust what he is telling us," Buturu added.
