Mama Sarah who is the grandmother to former US President Barack Obama, founded Mama Sarah Obama Foundation (MSOF) a charitable organisation, dedicated in helping orphans and poor families feed and educate their children.

Mama Sarah has used her own resources and relentlessly worked with community leaders to meet the dire needs of these orphans.

Due to her blood relations with the immediate former US President Barack Obama, her phenomenal work has come to light well beyond the boundaries of Kogelo village.

Foundation's mission

The Foundation’s mission is to improve the education and welfare of disadvantaged children through forging partnership and linkages with both local leaders, national and international partners.

The Foundation also constructed Early Childhood Development Centres, rehabilitation of Primary and secondary Schools, Construction of Medical Centres, Development of a Vocational Centre and Establishment of the Mama Sarah Scholarship Fund.

Mama Sarah’s Legacy Plan seeks to continue her work for future generations of children in Kogelo and its environs. The Plan, being implemented through the Mama Sarah Obama Foundation, will establish an educational and health campus in her home village of Kogelo.

Despite Obama having finished his tenure as US President, Mama Sarah continues to enjoy 24-hour police protection by the government and her home in Kogelo, Siaya County, remains a protected area and those seeking to visit will continue to be vetted by police stationed outside her compound.
