Embakasi West MP George Theuri has come out to explain the circumstances that led to his purchase of a luxury vehicle that has since been confiscated by the Director of Criminal Investigations.
Youthful Nairobi MP speaks after DCI confiscated his wife’s Mercedes Benz
Flamboyant Embakasi MP bought it as a birthday gift to his wife
DCI officers nabbed the Mercedes GLA 200 after establishing it had been registered as a trailer to evade the custom duty charged for such luxurious vehicles.
Theuri, however, says that he had bought the vehicle from a city showroom and was not aware of the tax issues facing the car.
“The vehicle was bought in a showroom and prior to purchasing it, a motor vehicle search revealed that everything was okay,” he said.
The flamboyant legislator had bought the vehicle in 2018 as a birthday gift to his wife – Cythia Wanjiru Gitonga.
The publicized gesture went viral on social media as several Kenyans admired the MP’s sense of romance.
Eugene Wamalwa Range Rover
Theuri joins a list of public officials who have had their cars confiscated after being duped by unscrupulous car dealers.
In 2016, Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa’s Range Rover was seized after it was found to have tax arrears amounting to Sh6.5 million.
The CS said he had bought the vehicle from a car dealer, unaware that it had falsely been registered as a lorry when entering the country.
