Over the weekend, workers at the Nairobi women’s hospital were treated to a bizarre incident after a form three student, who had been admitted at the facility committed suicide inside a toilet.

Reports indicate that the student had been admitted at the facility on Friday, after complaining of stomach pains and vomiting.

The 17 year-old, who was a student at a school in Kikuyu, Kiambu County was found hanging in a toilet on Saturday afternoon, after it was reported that she was missing on her bed.

Her body was transferred to the hospital mortuary after her parents were informed and police called to the scene.

Kilimani OCPD, Michael Muchiri said that police had launched investigations into the bizarre incident, to establish what could have prompted the girl to take her own life.

It’s believed that the student might have committed suicide upon learning that she was nine weeks pregnant.

Butere Girls student commits suicide

The incident comes days after another form three student from Butere girls in Kakamega County, also committed suicide inside a dormitory.

The Butere student (who hanged herself) left behind a suicide note, whose details are yet to be established.

Research shows that suicide is the third leading cause of death among adolescents and teenagers.

Teen suicide attempts

According to the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH), about 8 out of every 100,000 teenagers committed suicide in 2000. For every teen suicide deaths, experts estimate there are 10 other teen suicide attempts.
