He explained that the action had been necessitate following an exposé on a chemical substance being put in the meat.
"Following a media report on meat that may be unfit for human consumption due to presence of chemicals being sold in supermarkets, I have been given a laboratory report showing that a sample of meat sold at the Naivas Supermarket at Gateway Mall in Mavoko, Machakos County, had 3.286 milligrams of an additive that should not be used in meat.
"I have subsequently directed that the meat/butchery sections of all Naivas stores in Machakos County to be closed immediately. This is on the suspicion that the supplier of meat at all Naivas Supermarkets in Machakos County is the same entity," he explained in a statement.
Conditions for re-opening Naivas butchery
The Governor outlined that the only condition for re-opening the butcheries would be clearance from the county's public health department.
Dr Mutua further directed the department to carry out similar inspections in other supermarkets within the county.
Health CS Sicily Kariuki on Tuesday released a statement outlining that the controversial substance, sodium metabisulfite, was a permitted food additive in Kenya though not for meat.
