Shock as baby with rare deformity cries to death

The mysterious child was born without eyes.

The baby girl, who was prematurely born at 7 months, cried for hours and later succumbed early Monday when the mother, 22-year-old Mariam Mwakombo reportedly refused to breast feed the girl.

“The child had not had anything since Sunday morning. We buried it outside the home to keep off the bad omen that can come out of it,” Hassan Dzaya told the press.

Quizzed over why she decided to abandon the baby, the mother claimed that she was afraid of the baby as it was deformed.

'‘I have never seen a human being of that nature, the child frighten me. So I was’t sure of what I was breastfeeding,” she said.

Doctors opine that the child might have been born with an abnormality called anophthalia, in which one or both eyes do not form during pregnancy.

The mother to the child gave birth at home after she was turned away from various Mombasa County hospitals.

“She is seven months old. I never felt any pains during her birth. But on looking at her closely, I realised she didn’t have eyes,” the mother said.
