A KDF soldier on Tuesday drowned in a quarry at the Thika Barracks after he attempted to save his sons who had fallen into the quarry.

The soldier named Sergeant James Meme Kobia had tried to save his two sons who had slipped into the quarry.

Police reports indicated that Githinji aged 11, and Vincent Muchui aged 7 years, were playing around the 9-meter-deep excavation site, when they lost their footing and fell into the structure which is located inside the barracks in Makongeni.

The attempt by the father to save the boys after he jumped into the quarry with a tyre proved futile and resulted to the death of the three.

KDF’s Disaster Response Unit from Nairobi was called in to assist recover the bodies.

Nyahururu drowning

In May this year, two children drowned in a quarry in Nyahururu as they were swimming.

Attempts by locals to save the children were unsuccessful.

Nyandarua North OCPD Timon Odingo stated that the bodies were retrieved with the help of the local divers.

Residents had since called on the Laikipia County Government to fence off the place to avoid future tragedies.
