The suspect identified as Hillary Bett was smoked out of his hide-out in Kericho town where he was hiding and arrested.
Police reports indicate that Bett injected his 23-year-old female victim with sleep-inducing drugs and raped her at the imaging unit on Friday night.
The victim had gone for a CT scan at the hospital at 11:30pm Friday night after experiencing severe headache. The same hospital made headlines last year after a form 2 student who sought treatment was allegedly defiled on January 27.
Kericho County Police Commander James Mugera confirmed that “During the process, the suspect is said to have injected the victim with drugs and she fell unconscious. He allegedly took advantage of the situation and raped her”.
“The victim said that before she passed out due to the sedating drugs, she could tell that she was being sexually molested by the technician,” he added.
Tests confirm rape
The patient woke up after Bett was done with his questionable procedures and confronted him for allegedly raping her.
“Once the victim regained conscious, she and a friend confronted the suspect who immediately fled the scene.” Said Mugera.
According to the police boss, an examination conducted at the same hospital confirmed that the young woman had been raped.
She has since recorded a statement at Kapkatet Police Station and is expected to undergo counselling.
Treatment at odd hours
Further investigations indicate that the suspect may have planned the crime earlier as he is the one who suggested to one of the victim’s friends that they should visit the hospital at that odd hour (11:30 pm) because the number of patients seeking imaging services at that time is usually low.
An elaborate plan was put in place to apprehend the suspect who went into hiding shortly after he was confronted.
Form 2 student defiled at the same hospital
An officer posing as a negotiator contacted Bett ‘to settle the matter amicably without involving authorities’.
He was arrested after he presented himself to the negotiator and is being held at Kericho Police Station as investigations are conducted before he is arraigned.
On January 27, 2018, a form two student who sought treatment at the same hospital was defiled by an intern nurse.
The intern nurse identified as Dennis Kiplangat Bor was arraigned in court over the incident.
He denied the charges and was released on a Sh200,000 bond and a surety of a similar amount.
His fate is yet to be determined with the case is still pending before the court.
