In a letter addressed to the Attorney General, Kipkorir says the list of twenty four names should not be submitted to President Uhuru Kenyatta until his concerns are addressed.
The city lawyer sought to understand the criteria that was used to arrive at the 24 names who will join the prestigious rank of Senior Counsel.
He further challenged the committee that was chaired by Attorney General Kihara Kariuki to arrive at the 24 names picked for the Senior Counsel position.
“Did the Committee have a matrix that was applied at all? Did each member individually score all the applicants? How were the scores weighed?”
“Did the committee consider that its composition may not have reflected the face of the Law Society of Kenya and indeed the Nation?” Kipkorir posed.
Regional representation
He further claimed that nominees did not reflect the face of Kenya as it lacked representation from his own Kalenjin community, luhya, Kamba, Maasai, Luo, Samburu, and Costal tribes.
The lawyer, whose law firm has won various international awards, said it was ironical that successful law firms were getting global recognition but failing to be recognized by the committee.
“Pursuant to Rule 13 (3) and (4) of the Conferment Rules and Articles 35 of the constitution, let me have your prompt response on criteria used to nominate the 24 and to reject my application. In the meantime, till the above is responded and I exercise my right on whether or not to appeal, the committee should not forward the names to the President,” he concluded.
Kipkorir is one of the big shots who failed to attain the prestigious rank of Senior Counsel.
Other big names include Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi, former National Assembly Speaker Kenneth Marende, and Prof Ben Sihanya.
Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua are among the 24 high profile lawyers who joined the Senior Counsel’s club.
The selection committee comprises the Attorney General, LSK chairman, a Court of Appeal and a High Court judge, three Senior Counsels, and four advocates from the LSK.
