Lifestyle diseases are becoming a major challenge across the world due to unhealthy eating habits by the populous and Kenya is no exception.

Most Kenyans are experiencing difficulty in maintaining healthy eating habits unknown to them the dangers this might pose to their lives.

According to world statistics from the International Diabetes Federation, approximately 700, 000 Kenyans are living with diabetes but only 150, 000 know their health status and are taking required actions to reverse the adverse effects.

The above statistics display the dangers Kenyans are exposed to, especially those who are affected and unaware.

Due to the worrying trend, Broadways Bakery, Pan Africa Heart Foundation and Nairobi County Government has partnered to spearhead ‘BeSugarSmart’ campaign to conduct free Diabetes and Hypertension screening.

The free screening will be held on Saturday 13 October, at Kahawa West and will be led by Nairobi County First Lady Primrose Mbuvi and DJ Mo.

The free tests have already been conducted in Machakos, Uasin Gishu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Nakuru, Meru and Embu Counties.

Broadways Bakery Business development manager Devan Shah, stated that it was only beginning of the programme - adding that it would be rolled out in other parts of the country.

We seek to emphasize the ultimate importance of being sugar smart,” said Devan Shah.

The campaign has so far seen 5, 191 people screened and those diagnosed referred for treatment.
