The exercise follows the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) decision to redesign Lower Kabete and Peponi roads for expansion.

According to sources on the ground the traders had been warned to vacate the shops.

Police officers on the ground were diverting motorists as the process caused a traffic snarl up at the Sarit Centre roundabout.

Speaking to journalists, Westlands traders expressed their disappointment in President Uhuru Kenyatta and Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

They threatened to storm a building being constructed by the Government at the market and put up their businesses there.

“We were ejected from the main market by the Government for a formal one to be constructed so that we can move in. But it has delayed for several years. There is a court order blocking the demolition of the market but the Government has disobeyed it.

“If the Government is not able to complete the construction of the market, we will get in and complete it ourselves,” Secretary General of the Westlands Market Henry Kadogo.
